The Royal Aircaft Factory S.E.5 flew as a prototype in November 1916. After 77 were produced, it was replaced by the enhanced version S.E.5a that appeared in May 1917. More than 5.000 were used during the war by the air services of United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and USA.
